JBL Xtreme 2 vs. Xtreme 3: What is the difference?

In weighing your options between Xtreme 2 and 3, the choice may come down to budget. At the present publishing date, customers can save roughly $170 on a purchase of Xtreme 2 as opposed to its advanced brother – provided they don’t mind sacrificing some minute improvements.

MSRP’s Xtreme 3 is an excellent choice for those looking for the highest sound quality. It may come with a price tag, but you get what you pay for – power and premium audio that truly delivers!

Furthermore, users will have access to an equalizer through JBL Portable App if they already own this speaker or decide to upgrade its firmware. Unfortunately, features like these won’t be supported by previous models, such as XTreme 2, because they are far too outdated.

Design

Applauding the aesthetic design of JBL’s portable speakers, we are particularly fascinated by their latest model – Xtreme 3. This upgraded version brings a new level to its appearance, greatly improved from that of the predecessor, with an enhanced logo incorporating a sleek and modern appeal compared to earlier models’ “badge” style logo.

Further amping up aesthetics is its kidney bean shape as opposed to the cylindrical structure for increased visual interest in this timeless classic.

JBL’s Xtreme 3 has successfully honored its predecessor’s feature set while improving upon it in several ways. This device is dustproof and waterproof (IP67 rating), and it also features a useful 3.5mm aux port – something not found on many portable speakers released over the past 18 months.

Furthermore, JBL has increased size for enhanced output performance whilst simultaneously reducing weight compared to their previous model; an impressive technical feat indeed!

The Xtreme 2 and 3 are both equipped with USB outputs that enable their powerful power bank feature, allowing users to charge a cell phone or other device from the speaker’s built-in battery. The simple button configuration is almost identical across models while also providing excellent tactile feedback when used.

Furthermore, an additional rubber grip on the base of the Xtreme 3 provides extra stability for transportability purposes – all made possible by an included strap that hooks into specially designed grooves at the top of each model, bolstering portability despite their heavyweight designation (over 4 lbs).

The Xtreme 3 diverges from its preceding model, the Xtreme 2, by eliminating its built-in microphone. This may not be of great significance to most, yet for those using a speakerphone or a voice assistant on their device, it was an incredibly useful feature due to the high sound clarity and background noise resistance provided.

For charging convenience’s sake, too – USB-C is replacing AC chargers as today’s go-to option in many portable speakers – making this upgrade particularly advantageous for all users alike.

Durability

With their sturdy construction and high durability rating, Xtreme 3 speakers are well-prepared for any adventure. Despite being rated IP67 waterproof & dustproof – 10 times better than the average speaker – you should be wary of dropping them from higher heights due to their weight (more than 4 pounds).

Nevertheless, with proper maintenance, they can last up to three years or more at a beachside location without having to worry about sand or water damage.

Battery

Xtreme 2 and Xtreme 3 are equipped with an immense 10,000 mAh battery that gives them the power to act as a portable external charger. To put it into perspective, 15 hours of playback time is achieved for both models – making them quite resilient speakers.

Also noteworthy is that USB-C charging was added to improve on its predecessor by way of convenience and faster charge times (roughly one hour) compared to AC outlet recharging in the case of Xtreme 2.

With Xtreme 2 and 3’s power bank capabilities, you can easily charge your devices without worrying about draining the speakers’ large battery. This is an invaluable feature that gives users added convenience – enabling them to use their speaker as a reliable charging station for all electronic gadgets!

Software

Despite being historically unimpressive, JBL software has recently seen some welcome changes. With the help of app and firmware updates, users can now use their Xtreme 3 speakers with an adjustable EQ through the Portable App – a feature we tested on Flip 6 to great effect.

However, it should be noted that both types of speakers sound terrific from the initial setup without any fine-tuning, something those unfamiliar or uncomfortable using EQs would no doubt appreciate!

Xtreme 2 and Xtreme 3 are two fantastic JBL speakers, each with its own advantages. While the Connect+ party mode on Xtreme 2 is hard to beat, it, unfortunately, cannot be cross-compatible with PartyBoost of Xtreme 3, which many have been eager to try out.

However, despite being one version older, Xtreme 2 still has a notable edge in Bluetooth functions due to having 4.2 as opposed to 5.1 in XTreeme3. Most tech blogs agree that this makes for less latency when streaming wirelessly than newer models offer. Despite both versions offering a 1-year warranty from JBL, their customer service might make things even easier if you require help or support!

Final Thoughts

If you’re in the market for a portable speaker, JBL Xtreme 2 and 3 are both excellent choices. While the newer model does include some beneficial updates such as dust-proofing, USB-C charging and an improved design, to name a few, these may not necessarily be game changers that justify spending extra money.

This is especially true if one can find good deals on the previous version. So it’s worth considering how much value is actually added by investing in Xtreme 3 over its predecessor before making your purchase decision.
